Pollution, Flooding and Erosion
Our Kitsap communities are great places for people – but the runoff during rain storms results in damage to our streams, lakes, wetlands and shorelines. Salmon and other critters depend on these natural surface waters to live and thrive. Stormwater damages surface waters mainly in two ways: pollution picked up from our daily activities and the erosion caused by the rush of water from paved areas.
Stormwater runoff contains metals, gasoline, sediment, pathogens, nutrients from our everyday activities. Recognized as a major threat to the health of Puget Sound, we can all take actions to assure that new development is built to minimize the damage, retrofit aging systems, and protect lands that provide many ecosystem benefits. We all play a part in cleaner runoff.
